The following flies are listed in Francis Francis's book " A Book On Angling" from 1867.
For the river Don;
 
No.1 : (Mr. Brown).

Tag : Silver tinsel.
Tail : A few fibres of a Golden Pheasant rump feather and a small tuft of yellow crewel.
Butt : Black herl.
Body : Black Pig's wool.
Ribs : Silver twist.
Hackle : Black.
Throat : Jay.
Wings : Gled or dun Turkey strips.


No.2 : (Mr. Brown).

Tag : Silver tinsel.
Tail : A few fibres of a Golden Pheasant rump feather and a tuft of yellow crewel.
Body : About two-fifths dark red and three-fifths dark blue Pig's wool.
Throat : A light blue hackle and a short Grouse hackle over it.
Wings : Strips of the red of dun Turkey feather speckled with black.


No.3 : (Mr. Brown).
 
 
Tag : Gold tinsel.
Tail : A tuft of orange crewel.
Body : Two-third orange and one-third black Pig's wool.
Ribs : Narrow gold tinsel
Hackle : Only half way down, a Coch-y-Bondu hackle, with well marked centre.
Wings : Strips of grey Mallard with brownish points.

 
No.4 : (Mr. Brown).
 

Tail : A few fibres of Golden Pheasant rump feather
Body : Half yellow and half medium red Pig's wool
Ribs : Gold twist.
Hackle : Only halfway down, a small black Heron's hackle, just long enough in the fibres to cover the point and barb.
Wings : Strips of Grey Mallard with brownish points.

 
No.5 : (Mr. Brown).
 

Tail : A small topping.
Body : Purple claret Pig's wool
Ribs : Silver twist.
Throat : Black Heron, dressed spare, but longer in the fibre then the bent of the hook.
Wings : Two strips of Gled or Red Turkey.

 
No.6 : (Mr. Brown).
 
 
Tag : Gold tinsel.
Tail : A small bit of topping.
Body : Brown orange Mohair.
Ribs : Gold tinsel.
Hackle : Blue Heron, fibres to extend to about the bend of the hook.
Wings : Two strips of bright speckled Grey Turkey.
